Known Pleasures is a single patch of the biodynamic Gateway Vineyard in McLaren Vale on which we focus our winemaking. The fruit from these vines has incredible intensity and flavour and the tannins from the crunchy brown seeds are quite unique. This underpins a delicacy and finesse not commonly found in McLaren Vale fruit.

Known Pleasures is a dense, juicy wine with a latent power and is a step sideways from the Yarra Valley Shiraz that we produce.

The name and label are a tribute to an important musician: Ian Curtis of Joy Division, whose music is played without fail at least once a week during vintage.

VINIFICATION / MATURATION:

Fruit was handpicked at 6am into a refrigerated truck and carried over to Healesville.

The fruit was destemmed and pre-fermentation cold maceration was carried out for four days - 30% whole bunches in each open fermenter.

The vats were then warmed and given daily aerative drain and returns to initiate wild fermentation. As the ferments approached 11% alcohol, they were over seeded with a Rhone isolate yeast to finish the last portion of the fermentation.Wine was then pressed gently to tank, settled and gravity drained to barrels and puncheons for malolactic fermentation and maturation.

All oak vessels were of French origin with 30% new, 20% one year old and 50% older.

After 11 months in barrel the wine was blended in tank, settled and racked prior to bottling.

 GATEWAY VINEYARD

What is a Yarra Valley winegrower doing in the McLaren Vale? It all started with our fascination for Shiraz and its different incarnations across different sites. In 2002 we were offered the opportunity to become involved in a new project in what would ultimately be a biodynamic vineyard of Shiraz, Sangiovese and Viognier up on Gateway Hill, overlooking St Vincent’s Gulf in McLaren Vale.

It is a long truck ride back to the Yarra, but we believe the results justify the means. Gateway fruit has a vibrancy and vitality that shimmers and delivers wine of great power, underpinning a delicacy and finesse not commonly found in warmer climate fruit.
